Who we are

Pathfinder is a free career guidance service for young people aged 16–24 in the UK. We help you discover your skills, build a personalised career plan, and connect with peers who have been in a similar situation.

For the purposes of UK GDPR, the data controller is Pathfinder. You can contact us at hello@findmypath.app.

What data we collect

Onboarding conversation

When you chat with our AI guide, we store the full transcript of that conversation. This includes anything you share about your skills, interests, goals, and any personal circumstances (such as barriers to work or training). We use this transcript solely to generate your career plan.

Profile data

From your conversation we derive: skill tags, interest tags, aspirational roles, and a plain-English career plan. We also flag any barriers you mention (for example, transport, mental health, confidence) — these are stored separately, never shown publicly, and never used in any display visible to other users.

Sign-in data

When you sign in with Google or Discord, we receive your email address and display name from that provider. We do not receive or store your password.

Location

We store a broad location area (for example, “Manchester”) if you share it. We do not collect precise location or GPS data.

Usage data

We collect standard server logs (page requests, error logs) to keep the service running. We do not use third-party advertising trackers.

How we use your data

  • To generate your personalised 6-month career plan.
  • To match you with peers and mentors in a similar situation.
  • To facilitate mentor–mentee messaging within the platform.
  • To send you optional progress check-ins and conversation prompts (only if you opt in).
  • To improve the service — we may review anonymised, aggregated data to understand what is working.

We do not sell your data. We do not use your data for advertising.

AI processing

Your onboarding conversation and profile data are processed by a third-party AI provider to generate your career plan and power the chat features. That provider acts as a data processor on our behalf and is contractually prohibited from using your data to train their models.

Third-party services

We use trusted third-party infrastructure providers to run the service. Your data is stored in EU data centres and is covered by appropriate data processing agreements.

  • Your profile, messages, and account data are stored in EU data centres, encrypted at rest and in transit.
  • Sign-in is handled via Google or Discord. We receive your email address and display name only — no other data is shared back to them by us.

How long we keep your data

We keep your account and profile for as long as you use the service. If you ask us to delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days. Anonymised and aggregated statistics may be retained indefinitely.

Young people and safeguarding

Pathfinder is intended for people aged 16 and over. If you are under 16, please do not use this service. If you disclose something in the chat that suggests you or someone else may be at risk of serious harm, we may have a legal obligation to act.

If you are in crisis, please contact the Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7).

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate data.
  • Request deletion of your data (“right to be forgotten”).
  • Object to or restrict certain uses of your data.
  • Data portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@findmypath.app. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the ICO at ico.org.uk.

Cookies

We use a single session cookie to keep you signed in. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes we will post a notice on the app. Continued use after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
